5 Binge-worthy IT and Engineering TED Talks [Video Roundup]

Posted by Joann Hoxha on Jun 18, 2014 10:00:00 AM

Running out of topic conversations at the water cooler? Watch these 5 TED Talks for countless anecdotes to share with your friends and colleagues. Warning: The likelihood of getting sucked into watching all five videos is very high, and if you tune into Arthur Benjamin’s “mathemagics” talk first, you’ll be able to quickly calculate that’s more than an hour’s worth of YouTube binge watching. Enjoy!

  1. Arthur Benjamin – Self-proclaimed “Mathemagician” shares his secrets (15 minutes, 3 seconds)
Learn how to calculate numbers even faster than your calculator. If you don’t have the time to dedicate the full 15 minutes to this video, fast forward to the last 2 minutes to see the methods to his “mathness.”
  2. Boaz Almog  “levitates” a superconductor (10 minutes, 26 seconds)
Almog shows how quantum levitation and locking enables a super-thin, lightweight superconductor to lift more than 70,000 times its own weight. What this means is that the potential is there for a superconductor to hold something as heavy as an automobile. Watch, be astounded, and imagine the possibilities for sustainable energy.
  3. Pablos Holman – Top Hacker shows us how it’s done (17 minutes, 56 seconds)
This TED Talk is downright scary. Ever wonder how expert hackers are able to access your information so easily? Holman will show you how a little tinkering with JavaScript can get you a million friends; a thumb drive can track an individual’s browsing history and file folders; and that “secure” credit card you got in the mail is anything but.
  4. Thomas Suarez, 12-year-old app developer (4 minutes, 41 seconds)
Move over, app developers; there’s a new kid in town! Ever thought of developing a Justin Beiber Whack-a-Mole game? You’re out of luck –
little Thomas Suarez already beat you to it. Thomas said in the future he’d like to continue to develop more apps and games, so Thomas, if you happen to be reading this, let’s chat! We’d love to bring your talents to Oxford in a few more years as an applications development consultant!
  5. Debbie Sterling – Inspiring the next generation of engineers (17 minutes, 9 seconds)
Sterling provides a first-hand account of the challenges she faced as a woman pursuing an education and career in engineering and how she overcame these challenges. Sterling is the engineer behind “Goldiblocks,” a story-telling construction set for girls that helps them advance their spatial skills at a young age and develop the skills necessary for them to be successful as future engineers.
